Member Feature: Bonita & Corey Janzen

Meet Corey and Bonita Janzen, a dynamic duo who have been married for 31 years, sharing their lives with three sons, a daughter-in-law, and their 16-month-old granddaughter, Reese, who has lovingly dubbed them Nanny and Papa. Corey, an electrician, and Bonita, a high school teacher and guidance counselor, have found joy not only in their family but also in a newfound passion for CrossFit.

A Journey Begins

Corey and Bonita’s CrossFit journey began almost by accident. Introduced to the idea by a colleague, they took an hour during the pandemic to learn what it was all about. Initially, their CrossFit experience didn’t go much further than that, but they knew they needed to keep active. So, they joined a traditional gym, working out together in the mornings for a few years.

Their curiosity was piqued again last winter when Bonita saw her colleagues on social media, Sara and Megan, competing in a weightlifting competition. The spark was lit. Bonita reached out, and with the encouragement of Sara and a nudge from Jason, she took her first step into CrossFit in April 2024. The excitement was contagious, and soon Corey was joining her.

Breaking Barriers

Starting CrossFit wasn’t without its challenges. Corey and Bonita admit they initially felt too out of shape to participate initially, but they were determined to regain their functional movement, stay healthy, and keep up with their granddaughter as they edge closer to retirement.

Bonita, who initially struggled with cardio, can now tackle burpees and even run 200 meters nonstop—a significant achievement from when she had to walk half the distance when she first started. Corey faced his own challenges with the technical aspects of weightlifting, but has been working hard to perform movements like the clean and jerk in one fluid motion and completing workouts within the allotted time.

Finding Strength

Through persistence and practice, they discovered their strengths. Bonita feels most confident on the bench press, while Corey enjoys the timed workouts, relishing the energy they give him. The structure of CrossFit has been a game-changer for them, providing the motivation they needed to push themselves harder than they ever did alone.

The CrossFit Community

What has made this journey even more special is the CrossFit community. From day one, Corey and Bonita felt welcomed and encouraged by both the coaches and fellow members. The sense of belonging and support has made all the difference, especially when they were new and still finding their footing.

For Corey and Bonita, CrossFit has not only boosted their physical health but has also enriched their lives outside the gym. They have more energy, feel healthier and happier, and love spending time together—whether it’s gardening on sunny days or traveling.

Words of Wisdom

Their advice to anyone considering CrossFit? It’s not as hard as you think. Even on days when getting up at 5:45 a.m. feels impossible, they always feel better after a workout. The five factors—eat, sleep, move, think, and connect—play a big role in their lives, helping them stay balanced and energized.

One of the biggest surprises? How much they enjoy working out together after all these years, and how CrossFit has become a part of their journey toward a happy, healthy future. They don’t have specific fitness goals—they’re just excited to stay active and be ready for whatever adventures come their way with their active family.

For Corey and Bonita, CrossFit has changed their perspective on fitness and health. Their takeaway? You’re never too old to try something new. And they’re proving it, one WOD at a time.
