MEMBER FEATURE: Amy Kozlow
If there’s one thing you need to know about Amy Kozlow, it’s that she’s going to keep you on your toes—both inside and outside the gym. With a quick wit and a quirky sense of humour that keeps everyone laughing, and a perspective on fitness that’s as refreshingly honest as it is entertaining, Amy is a true gem of the CrossFit CL community. We’re so glad she’s stuck to us like an octopus to the face (her words, not ours!).
A Little Bit About Amy
When asked to tell us about herself, Amy’s response was, “Uhg, please no.” Which is exactly why we love her. But since we refuse to take no for an answer, here’s what we know: Amy is a dog lover through and through—if there’s a pup in the room, she’s probably already befriended it. Her hobbies include lifting things (sometimes with bent knees, sometimes not), discussing very niche book genres with her equally book-obsessed gym friends, and skillfully avoiding unnecessary math. Originally, she started CrossFit to keep up her endurance for soccer, but now she’s here for the vibes, the people, and, of course, the occasional four-legged visitor.
How It All Started
Amy first found CrossFit CL through a beginner weightlifting class. The weightlifting room at her previous gym was filled with dudes yelling and slamming weights—way too intense for her taste. The word "beginner" was much more her speed.
“So, I went to a new gym where Jason and Kade tried their absolute best to turn us into lifters. And they are still trying to this day. Bless their dedicated lil hearts. One day we might even bend our knees.”
And though it took her a while to sign up for a membership, she’s now officially stuck with us. Forever <3
CrossFit Journey
Amy’s fitness journey began as a way to keep up her endurance for soccer, but somewhere along the way, it turned into something more. Now? No goals, just vibes. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t constantly surprising herself.
“I’m pretty proud of anything I do, genuinely surprised at it all.”
Favorite & Most Challenging Movements
Amy has a unique relationship with CrossFit movements. She acknowledges that they are, in fact, exhausting—always, every time, without exception. But if there’s one true nemesis?
“Counting. And math. And remembering what you JUST mathed. I don’t overcome it, I just lose track of what I was doing, stand there for a while, and stop when others do and call it a day.”
At the end of the day, does it really matter if you miscount a rep or forget what round you’re on? Not really. What matters is that you showed up, moved, and probably made someone laugh in the process.
How CrossFit CL Has Changed Her Life
While Amy won’t claim to have become a whole new person because of CrossFit, she will admit to experiencing a few benefits. For one, she can now pick up a bag of dog food with ease. On the downside, she is always sore. (Yes, Amy, we hear you. Rolling out and stretching is important.)
And then there’s the biggest bonus of all—finding her people.
“I’m collecting smutty book friends and together we will take over the world. Or just quietly talk about the things we had to Google.”
The CrossFit CL Community
Amy describes the CrossFit CL community as a magical land where the nicest humans in the city have somehow all been gathered under one gym membership.
And while she could probably list a thousand names, her top pick for best part of the gym?
"Gary."
For those who don’t know, Gary is the four-legged, tail-wagging mascot of the Woods family. Amy appreciates Gary’s presence at the gym almost as much as the workouts themselves. Almost.
Advice for Newcomers
Amy’s words of wisdom for anyone new to CrossFit are both practical and a little bit threatening:
“Start rolling out your quads now. Keep your traps down OR SOMEONE WILL ATTACK YOU AND MAKE THEM GO DOWN FOR YOU. Read the blogs. MEMORIZE the blogs. You will be quizzed. Get massages regularly. Roll out your feet on a PVC pipe. Be nice to your shoulders. And knees. And yourself. See, I am learning.”
Everyone got that? lol
What Keeps Her Coming Back
Amy doesn’t rely on motivation—she relies on scheduling. “Work prefers a set schedule over just leaving sporadically, so it’s less motivation and more just scheduled into my workday.”
Honestly, this is a great strategy! Keep it up!
Looking Ahead
As for future goals? Amy has none. And she’s okay with that. She’ll just keep showing up and seeing what happens.
But if there’s one fitness philosophy she’s adopted, it’s this:
“Just try the things until you find a thing you enjoy, then just do the thing. But also pick up heavy things, it’ll be good for you in the long run.”
Final Words
Amy made it very clear that she does not like being the center of attention. But whether she likes it or not, she’s an irreplaceable part of this community, and we are lucky to have her (even if she disappears into the background right after this feature is published).
Amy, thank you for making our gym a better (and infinitely funnier) place!
