MEMBER FEATURE: Community Matters
If you are a member of CFCL you probably know Norm and Becky. They take community seriously, and one of our five most impactful factors - CONNECTION - is of their top priorities.
Like a lot of us, Becky and Norm were looking for something 'new' to get back into fitness and help address their general well being. Norm started with cycling but they found out about CrossFit in June of 2012 and joined - Jason was their “on-ramp” coach! They were immediately impressed by the energy that they found in the community and were hooked.
They both enjoy the physical aspects that CrossFit presents, including the variety, intensity and purpose;
Becky: If we are talking favourite movements, I'd say, deadlifts, push-ups, and burpees! Other than ringette, that I played for almost 30 years, there has been no other sport/gym/fitness activity that has kept me so engaged like Crossfit. The constantly varied workouts is something I love.
Norm: I like the variety of workouts available to us and the intensity of them. I know that a lot is being accomplished towards improving my health, fitness, and functionality in a short period of time. With a lot on my daily agenda, it's awesome to be able to get a good workout, including a proper warm-up and some social connection in under an hour.
Their number one favourite thing about CrossFit, and CFCL in particular, is the COMMUNITY.
Norm: I know that I'm living a better life due to fitness and I love the people at CFCL from the coaches to the members. I love that I have the opportunity to meet new people constantly. Doing something challenging with others is both inspiring and rewarding.
Becky: Definitely [my favourite thing is] my Gym Family. Hands down. I can not emphasize how important this community is to me. They stood behind me when I needed it most. They have been supportive, loving, and a constant reminder that there are like minded people out there who only want the very best for those around them. Our gym family has celebrated marriages, babies, graduations, new jobs, retirements, successes, etc., but, have also helped others, like myself, when they're struggling just getting through rough patches. They are truly my chosen family.
They show their love for the community in a variety of ways (as Becky mentioned above) but Norm is going a step further. Through his real-estate company, Royal LePage Vidorra, he is graciously donating $1000 towards the CFCL covid loan, for every closed sale (selling or buying) that comes from a gym member by the end of 2022! (see more details HERE)
Norm: I'd love to have the opportunity to help more of our members with their changing housing needs, and it's a way in which members can make a meaningful contribution to helping the gym pay down the loan that was necessary to get the gym through a tough time.
That is what the CFCL community is all about, helping each other (and not just with fitness). Coaches helping members, member helping the gym, the community coming together to help each other. A key factor in bringing this all together for everyone - Owner and Head Coach - Jason Trinh.
Becky: Our coaching staff is top notch...their guidance, support and motivational talks, keeps me coming back. Without gushing about Jason too much, I honestly don't know of another 'gym owner' so invested in each and every one of his clients. He built this community for people who enjoy working hard and who realize the importance of fitness, but, he is not only a coach and mentor, he's a confidante, a therapist, and most of all, he's a true friend.
Becky and Norm have leaned on Jason, other coaches and their CrossFit community to help them through ups and downs, and like all of us, still face barriers today.
Becky: For me, right now, I'm trying to get my 49 year old body to co-operate with my 29 year old mind. For the past few years, I've been dealing with some pain while moving, but, working with Jason (and actually listening to him), has allowed me to continue to move. At one point, I thought the only way to be effective at CrossFit was to work towards RXing every workout, but, again, Jason reminds me that moving without pain is my end goal, so, now, I just move to get sweaty (not that hard, I sweat standing still) and have fun with friends.
We are so grateful to have people like Norm and Becky as part of our community at CrossFit OneFifty. Their dedication to the lifelong journey of health and fitness, as well as their commitment to our community is what makes CFCL what it is today. <3
Norm and Becky have been married for 3 years and together for 11. CrossFit has been a part of their relationship for 10 of those! They both live and work together from home. Combined they have four children; Pamela, Justin, Alex, and Brielle, and one granddaughter; Ainsley. They also have one very spoiled dog; Murph (who is pretty much the furry love of Becky’s life). Other than going to the gym, Becky likes to watch crappy TV, complain about making dinner, spend time outdoors, Martini Fridays, travelling, and spending time with friends and family. Norm always loves a good challenge, being outdoors and has a growing love for the beauty of the natural world. He likes trekking across a mountain range, having a fun adventure like jumping out of a plane, and learning new things like singing.
