Honestly joining CrossFit has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my mental and physical health. Will continue moving on in hopes of continuing my progress. Appreciate the ongoing support and fun atmosphere.
— Nathan Rivard

Emma DeWaal

Emma was influenced to join CFCL in May 2022, by a former member and she is “so grateful for it!” She keeps coming because:

“I feel better mentally and physically.

It’s the one thing I’ve been able to keep consistent in my life.

The eggs…(iykyk)

I want to stay stronger than my boys for as long as possible!! #dontmesswithmom

And mostly importantly, the people and coaches (this community has had a profound impact on me and I’m so thankful for it and the support it has given me)”

Inside of the gym Emma loves to deadlift and enjoys the struggle/challenge of gymnastic movements.

Outside of the gym Emma and her kids enjoy galavanting around town, cooking, doing all the sports, going to the river, building (and cleaning up) random inventions, and playing board games (usually with their own set of rules). They celebrate any ‘holiday’ they can from Summer Solstice to a full moon or Yule and anything else outside the ‘traditional’ holidays (which they also love).

“Our favourite vacation spot (after one trip) is Disney World. We have become mildly obsessed and are eagerly trying to find ways to get back ASAP (and good thing because we missed the cinnamon buns at Gaston’s Tavern…).”

Emma you are an inspiration to all women and moms out there. We are so happy to have you as part of our community!

Ashley McClenaghan

Ashley came to the gym because she wanted to go to a place with a class, where they tell you what to do, and you do it. :)

“Knowing some good friends of mine that go to this gym, it was super easy to pick this place. When I first walked in the door Lauren was doing back squats (I think), as she was going down in her squat, she looked right at me and said "Hello, Welcome" right then I knew this was going to be a great place, it just gets better each week I show up.”

If you didn’t guess from her photo, Ashley likes to have fun, inside and outside of the gym.

Some of her favourite Crossfit movements would be pull ups, push ups, all the presses, Rowing and deadlifts. “Not a big fan of squat movements, I'm getting there.”

She enjoys hobbies like darts, curling, and golf, as well as going to concerts and sporting events. She is also Rush Season ticket holders, which if you have gone is an amazing, energetic time.

“I'm definitely a sucker for anything that is themed, I like to dress up. I have my own little "Party City" of accessories for pretty much any occasion.

I am very much a cat person, however, I do have 2 beautiful shelties, they do sometimes act like cats, so it's a win.

My favorite thing of all time is Mickey Mouse.

My super hero of choice is Batman.”

Thank you for bringing your energy and personality to our CFCL community Ashley!!!

Anne & Antoine Joubert

Anne and Antoine wanted to try out CrossFit this June (2023). They started then and have never looked back.

“We wanted to take control of our health, no longer feel tired, and establish a positive lifestyle. We love coming to this family-friendly gym. We were surprised to see how supportive and motivating every member is.”

They moved to Canada from France about a year ago. They have loved exploring what our great province and country has to offer - specifically in the outdoors.

“We love Canada; the nature there is truly magnificent. We never thought we would see turquoise blue lakes one day. We adore hiking and have already been to the Rockies three times in one year. Our next trip will be to the Montreal region this summer to work on our Canadian French and see if we can make ourselves understood!”

We are so happy you joined our community and look forward to you helping us all with our language skills as well :P

Kristin Seivewright

aka Bucky (fun fact - my Besties kids know me as Auntie Bucky - they have never called me Kristin)

Kristin joined because her friends Megan and Mel had been coming to CFCL for years and she had always heard about how great the community was.

“After being very inactive over the COVID years I decided to try it out just once and never looked back. I come back because of the people, and the inclusive coaching. The noon class is now full of some of my best friends!”

At the gym, Bucky loves the bike and bench. “I love a good cardio session. oh and bench press!  One day I am going to bench as much as Amy Kozlow.”

When she is not at the gym, she loves camping and spending time at the lake with her family and friends in the summer. In the winter, he favourite holiday is Christmas.

“I love the glow of the Christmas tree in the dark, and the excitement building in my kids until Christmas morning. I love the hustle getting things ready and then how everything seemingly stops between the week of Christmas and New Years when I can do nothing other than sit and work on a puzzle with my friends and family.”

We are so glad that Megan & Mel encourages you to step into CFCL! What a wonderful addition you have been to our community <3

kade & Brittany

Kade and Brittany have been part of our community, before it was an official CFCL community. They each had a lot to say about their journeys and so we wanted to share a bit of their story together and individually as well.

Lets start with some fun stuff, some of their favourite things (mostly from Kade 😜):

Weekends (Kade): Getting up with Crew and having a cup of coffee while he plays and explores. This has become much less sitting watching him to now chasing him around as he is constantly on the move. I enjoy my mornings and now I have a little buddy to enjoy them with.

CrossFit movement: Britt really enjoys gymnastics related movements! “I’m not very good at them but it feels like an excuse to just play around like a kid!” Kade loves Overhead Squats. “I like how difficult they are.”

Holiday (Kade): Christmas. I enjoy the traditions. Some Britt and I have made and some we have brought in from our respective families and melded together for our Christmas. Setting up the Christmas tree and enjoying a rum and eggnog or three. Making Llama sugar cookies, it was a thing my family did since we raised llamas. Trying pickled pigs feet even though I know I do not enjoy it but I will always try it because it is something for whatever reason Brittany likes. This year we get to do it with Crew and create some new traditions.

Hobby: Kade says his biggest hobbies are snowboarding and mountain biking. “I look forward to our annual trip for each of those every year. A group of us go biking out west and it has it’s moments when you are biking up a mountain and you question “why” and ask yourself if you even do fitness. Then you go down and it is fast and scary at times, your heart is pumping and its fun. Snowboarding, you could be freezing cold on the chair up but on the way down you don’t feel it and for all those days you go and don’t get powder, that one day you do and there is really nothing quite like it and floating on the pow down the mountain. The beers on the side of the mountain and the people also help make the experience and that’s when you stop to appreciate it and forget everything else and be in the moment.”

Animal (Kade): Llama’s. “We raised llama’s on our farm when I was younger and at our peak we had roughly a hundred between llama’s and alpaca’s. They were nice animals and I spent a lot of time looking after them and hauling bails and water in -30 weather and I just enjoyed them. We had names for all of them, Brittany named one “Cinnamon Boots” because it had brown fur on all four legs about a quarter way up. That is its registered forever name. We rode them, bred them and sold them and no I never ate one. Brittany did eat an alpaca burger when were in Peru though. It was also cool to see them out in the wild when we were in Peru.”

Enjoy their stories.

KADE LISKA

Kade remembers the very start of his (and Britt’s) CrossFit/fitness journey…

“I remember way back, one time Brittany went out for a run and did like 5km or something and I said “oh I could do that”. I later proceeded to try and do that only to have my legs cramp up and walk most of it and at one point I remember thinking "I should call a cab home because I could hardly walk. At that moment, I knew I needed to start doing something and the only shorts I owned were board shorts so it was quite the sight. Britt had done some CrossFit classes with her sister Ashley. She had mentioned this to me, and after I am sure I made fun of it and said I won’t be doing that…well she got me to go.

We met Jason and Val and continued to go for a while, until we fell off the radar for whatever reason - being poor students or any excuse we could think of. Britt and I continued running and were looking for things we could do together and got into acro yoga, which we had some fun with. Then we were houseboating with Britt’s family and Ashley talked Brittany into doing a workout and we ended up chatting about it. I reached out to someone I knew and he recommended chatting with Jason and Val as they were just about to open up a gym.

I messaged Jason, showed up at the gym before it opened, signed up and have not looked back. The gym gave Britt and I a place were we could spend time together and improve on ourselves. It allowed us to be competitive and even compete together.

The reason I continue to come back is mostly a result of the relationships I have made over the years, with some people I am sure will be lifelong friends. Also the atmosphere being very welcoming and with focus on helping people improve themselves, not always with fitness. I guess I will keep coming. 😜”

BRITTANY Neumeier

aka B, Beej, Britt, Neumy, NeuLiska.

Brittany’s reasons for coming to CFCL has evolved over the years.

Connection - the gym began as a place for Kade and I to reconnect, as our lives became more and more busy we were finding it hard to make time for each other. CFCL made space for that in our relationship.

Building confidence - as a person who didn’t consider themselves to be athletic in high school, CFCL gave me a safe and comfortable outlet to explore what fitness and athleticism might look like for me now as an adult. I was able to, with the guidance of their coaches, try out different things and really hone in on what got me excited. CFCL built my confidence in my body and what it could be physically capable of.

Community - CFCL quickly became a source for community and friendship. The outstanding community, with its easy-going atmosphere, focuses on building connections with your fellow gym mates regardless of fitness level.

Mental health - after I suffered an injury, my focus on competitive fitness lessened. But thanks to CFCLs attentive coaches I was able to continue attending classes comfortably. We worked to shift my focus toward movements that kept me safe and comfortable and allowed me to work on healing. CFCL functioned heavily as a positive mental health outlet for me during this time.

I’ve found that CFCLs flexibility, diversity, and experienced coaching staff have provided a space that has met my evolving needs throughout many of my life’s changes.”

We are so thankful to have both Kade & Britt (and now Crew) as part of the CFCL community. We look forward to the future journey, and stories.

I do have to say that it has been an awesome month at the gym. It definitely is overwhelming but there is such a warm welcoming attitude, that I have really enjoyed it so far… other than hurting everyday.. but a good hurt. This gym is so much more than a gym. I have never been in another where everyone is so welcoming, nonjudgmental and friendly. Look forward to making it a part of my life.
— Joan

Jordan Vancha & KATHLEEN kent

aka Vancha & Kent

These two awesome people joined CFCL in the spring of 2023. Kathleen was part of the police team for the YXE first responders fitness festival, that Jason was coaching, and Jordan was looking for a new gym to attend.

“We keep going because we like the community, the facility has accommodations for our family, especially for children, and the location is great in relation to our home.”

They have fit right in with the community and have found their favourites…or not so favourite CrossFit movements already :)

Kathleen: Anything other than burpees or anything relating to burpees.

Jordan: I like most of the movements, not a big fan of double unders or gymnastic movements…I’m ok with never being a gymnast.

Outside of the gym, you’ll catch Jordan & Kathleen at the Rugby pitch. “We both love the physical challenge and comradery of the sport.”

We are so happy to have you both as part of the CFCL community and look forward to seeing you, and your family, blossom.

Matthew Harmin

aka Kentucky aka Harmonious aka Big Hashish aka Trash Panda aka Walkabout aka Beans

Matt (or insert nickname above) first came to the gym when her was invited by his friend Rob Woods, who he met playing basketball.

“We wrapped up basketball season and he invited everyone and I knew for my own good I wanted it to be CrossFit season after that. I think I've stuck around because I've just been having way more fun with it than I expected, and also because I feel like I have plenty of work to do and this is a great place to get that work in.

I have benefited greatly from the coaching and every single one of the trainers is very kind and knowledgeable. Especially when it comes to the olympic style weightlifting exercises and running, the pointers on technique and the thoughtful programming have really helped me.

It's also just a great community to be a part of because everybody wants to take on a challenge and get after it. I've met some very interesting people, seen a few absurd feats of athleticism, and it is just fun to do the workouts together because a little encouragement can go a long way. I look forward to coming to the gym and I am getting what I need out of the experience.

There have been times where I was a little hurt but going to the gym actually helped because I was able to do a downright therapeutic version of the workout. There are other times where the workout is just an epically brutal ass whooping and I love that too.”

We asked Matt about a bunch of his favourites, here is what he had to say:

Favourite thing to do on the weekend and why? I like going directly from the gym to the all you can eat sushi buffet and then to naptime.

Favourite CrossFit movement and why? Power Snatches because I am a natural virtuoso with them and they are my speciality.

Favourite holiday and why? Thanksgiving, because it's all about gratitude.

Favourite animal and why? Raccoons, we are kindred spirits. 🦝

Justis Sittler

Say hello to one of our New Coaches (in training) Justis! She joined CFCL because she had just moved to Saskatoon for school and was looking for a new gym.

“I had a couple other gyms in mind to try but from the first class at 150 I knew I wanted to stay there. The coaches and members were so friendly and welcoming. I have learned so many new skills and continue too because of the amazing coaches pushing me to do my best.

I recently decided I would like to start coaching. I wanted to do this because I have always enjoyed coaching from when I was in high school and realize how important it is to have a great coach. So I want to learn all I can from Jason and the other coaches. I’m so excited to be helping people improve in the gym. To me it’s always the best feeling watching someone try their hardest to get a certain movement and finally achieve it.”

In true CFCL style, Justis loves all animals, but her favourite would have to be cats. 🐈

“I have one cat named pumpkin he’s big orange, fluffy, and very cuddly. He loves lots of treats and following me when I go on walks.”

We are so excited to have you as part of the CFCL team! We look forward to seeing you flerish even more <3

Kerry & Marilyn friessen

Kerry and Marilyn started CrossFit back in 2010 with the goal of getting stronger, and maintaining mobility. This progressed to wanting to be able to carry the grandchildren and now keep up with them.

They transitioned to CFCL when opening our doors as StrongFit YXE in Sept 2016 and continue to do CrossFit because of the “coaching philosophy, sense of community and the variety of workouts”.

Besides Crossfit, Kerry and Marilyn love to travel and usually pick a destination where they can Scuba Dive. They have seen many amazing under water vistas and sea life. Bonaire, Cayman Islands and Hawaii are some of their favorite places to vacation.

Outside of the water, Marilyn likes gardening, and sewing/quilting and Kerry keeps busy with his salt water aquarium, collecting wine and building the many projects Marilyn dreams up.

“We are very thankful for the exceptional coaching and the many friends they have made through our gym CrossfitCL.”

We are thankful for you both as well <3

Alexandre Charlot

This is Alex. He lives in Paris, France (Yup you read that right) but visits Saskatoon from time to time for work. We are grateful he chooses to drop into CrossFit OneFifty (CFCL) when he is in town.

So out of all the gyms in Saskatoon, why did he choose to try and continue to come back to CFCL?

Alex: …because of the great reviews on the internet. It is also close to my work and people are welcoming. I keep going to CFCL to keep in "good shape" and prevent any bad posture.

We asked Alex a few fun questions and he wanted to share what is ideal weekend would be:

“My favorite weekend will be wake up, go to the gym, have a nice lunch then going for a walk in nature and finally catch up around a beer. Also, half a day to chill.”

Sounds like the perfect weekend <3 Thanks for joining us when you are in Saskatoon Alex!

Sarah Bublish & Jordan Breker

Meet Sarah & Jordan! They started at CrossFit OneFifty (CFCL) in May of 2023.

“We started CrossFit because we wanted to get in shape, and we’ve stuck with CFCL because of the community and coaches.”

We asked them a few fun questions and they wanted to share their favourite holidays…

Sarah: My favourite holiday is Thanksgiving because you get to spend time with friends and family. Plus the food is always amazing!

Jordan: My favourite holiday is Christmas because I go on a annual ice fishing trip.

We are so glad to have you both as are part of the gym and we look foward to those holidays coming up soon!

Lesley Patkau

Lesley started doing CrossFit as additional training for ultimate disc in 2016 but switched over to CFCL in January of 2023. She had been a awesome addition to the gym!

“The coaching at CFCL is amazing and the 6:45am crew really sealed the deal. I love the community as a whole.”

Outside of the gym, Lesley is a self employed carpenter and occasionally travels with a non-profit organization that does international relief work.

Jill Bailey

Meet Jill! She has been at CFCL since June of 2020!

“This place means so much to me, and everyone in it means even more! It is definitely my happy place and where I feel my best! The people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made are what keep me coming back (shout out to my 5:45am crew!). I’m very grateful to be part of the CFCL family. And damn it, I’m going to get those double unders someday!!!”

Outside of the gym Jill finds joy at work (she manages Saskatoon Surgicentre and is a operating room nurse at RUH), as well as working in her yard, with her daughter or hanging with her doodles.

“I love my job, and work a lot! I have the best kid in the world (I’m biased ), my 14 year old Christmas baby (best Christmas present ever!) I love working in my yard, my neighbors have been known to ask me what’s the secret to my lawn! I have two doodle dogs that mean the world to me, Bailey and Maisey.”

the shand family

We now have three members of the Shand family at CFCL - Dawna, Jason & Kyla! And it all started with Dawna enjoying one of her favourite winter hobbies, rec league curling. It was her Wednesday night curling teammates, Claire and Carla who pointed her in the direction of CFCL. So in Nov 2021, she gave it a try :)

Dawna: CrossFit was not something I was looking for. My preconceived notion was that people who do CrossFit always seem to be hurting or injured. I needed a gentler, beginner type of class since it had been awhile since I’d been to the gym, and depending on the day was already finding I had some aches and pains of my own. I was told to talk to Jason, and that everything could be scaled to whatever level I was at. I was actively looking for a gym, one where I would be given the workout rather than shown the equipment then left to my own devices, so was easily convinced to give it a try.

After almost 10 months of Dawna coming, Jason was also looking to improve his health and she ensured him he would like it too. And she was right :)

Jason: When I started, I was a broken and stressed out man who was not productively active. I had just made a change at work to decrease my stress and knew I had to work on my physical health. I can say I was afraid if CrossFit due my age and susceptibility to injury. So what really got me hooked was the coaches ensuring I was doing it right in order to prevent injury.

Fast forward to May of 2023 and Kyla decided to join her parents and because she really enjoys trying different workouts. Everyone had something a little different to say about their initial experience and why they have stuck around :)

Kyla: I keep coming back because of the amazing atmosphere and incredible community that is a guarantee every time you walk in the door. That, paired with the awesome coaching sealed the deal for me!

Jason: I really enjoy the positive attitude, the smiling faces, and the group encouragement. I hate going to a gym with headphones on and never talking to anyone.

Dawna: I won’t go so far as to say I loved it right out of the gate (time on the echo bike was a big part of the first class - still one of my least favourite things to see up on the board) but the atmosphere was special. It’s not just a building, it’s a place that welcomes everyone. There are such positive, encouraging, and inspiring people. Nobody judging if I scaled a workout or cut back reps (on the contrary being congratulated and reminded of what I did do instead of what I didn't). And that encouragement builds confidence. I can’t think of any reason in my every day life I’d need to do a rope climb, but love that I can and that I’m not letting age stop me from trying some things I never thought I would.”

Inside and outside of the gym, the Shand family have an array of favourite things:

Dawna: For you Jason Trinh…instead of my favourite exercise…my favourite stretch - COUCH STRETCH.

Kyla: Favourite CrossFit movement would be cleans, deadlifts, or bench press. Anytime I get to move some heavy weight, I’m happy! My favourite thing to do outside of the gym is camping, hiking, snowboarding, or rock climbing. Anything I can do outdoors with my dog, Raj (bonus points if it’s in the mountains).

Jason: My favourite exercises in the gym are deadlifts and bench presses. I can’t really explain why they are my favorite, but I know that I am more excited when I see them in the workout. Today I’m also very happy to say that I was a dope on a rope. I was able to stand on the rope for the first time. So maybe that’ll become my next favourite exercise. My favourite hobby outside of the gym is teaching. There are a number of courses that I really enjoy teaching, and I would say that this is more a hobby than a second job. It is kind of nice to get paid for doing what I love.

Families that workout together, have more fun :)

TIM GABB & CHELSEA SVEINBJORNSON

Chelsea and Tim met doing what they both love - CrossFit! They joined CFCL (or StrongFit YXE at that time) together in 2016 when it first opened its’ doors. Chelsea had just finished lifting at powerlifting nationals and they were both looking for a new gym and to get back into CrossFit. When they heard Tron and Val were opening up a gym together they both knew that was the answer.

If you haven’t met Tim and Chelsea yet it’s likely because they took some time away while starting a family and having their 2 boys - Eidur 3, and Boston 1. But they are now both back at it and still enjoying the journey :)

Chelsea has always enjoyed maxing out and throwing a heavy barbell around, but since having 2 babies to her surprise she has been more focused on and enjoying body weight movements.

One of Tim’s favorite movements used to be box jumps. Fun fact - the day after Tim proposed to Chelsea he ruptured his achilles tendon by linking 30” box jumps (friendly reminder: please step down from box jumps). Tim still enjoys box jumps, but him and Chelsea both choose not to link them anymore since this injury.

Through it all, Tim & Chelsea have perservered and keep finding their way back to us.

“It’s more than just a gym to me. We have made lifelong friends here. I look forward to going and what keeps me coming back is the amazing community and how I feel after a workout. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging. We have equipment at home, but it’s so much more enjoyable to come to the gym and do the workout in a group setting. I am so grateful for Jason and what he has created - he has such a big heart and always puts his members first and above all else.”

tammy lowes

AKA: Not sure if it counts as a nickname, but… the BEST one ever! Nana

Tammy joined CFCL in September 2022, initially because of the virtual classes. Like many through COVID, she was working from home.

“I have a lot of equipment at home, but was lacking motivation. Searching for virtual CrossFit classes, I was very fortunate to come across Crossfit OneFifty!  Val and the morning crew welcomed me with open arms!  I loved starting my day with the virtual team.”

Now Tammy has moved back to working in the office. So unfortunately the virtual class time does not work on a regular for her anymore (though she does still pop in from time to time), but she just shifted over to join in-person classes in the afternoon and that is working great for her!

“The coaches and the members of the gym are the best part of the workout… don’t get me wrong, I do love a good WOD – but it is the sense of belonging/community that keeps me coming back and motivated.”

Tammy loves the variety of movements and options that CrossFit has to offer, but if she had to pick just a couple, rowing and deadlift would be at the top of the list.

“Rowing because it is something different from the ‘normal’ cardio that I have always done.  There is definitely a technique to rowing, it is such a great workout, as it is strengthening your arms, legs and core… while increasing your cardio!  A “one-stop-shop” :) And deadlifts, are one of my favorite weighted exercises,  I am sure because that is one movement I am confident with my form lol.  Not only that it is very empowering to see how much weight I am able to lift, I just recently got my PR, during one of the virtual classes!”

Tammy loves CrossFit, and will continue to encourage anyone and everyone to try it out!

“The coaches are so supportive, and are always encouraging me. I tend to stay within my comfort zone, but with the support of the coaches I have the confidence to add a bit more weight, try to rope climb or pushing a bit further to get my toes to the bar, (these are just a few examples ).  CrossFit is for everyone!  Every movement within the classes is scalable to you!  I encourage you to try it, you will not be disappointed!  The members and coaches will be your biggest cheerleaders!”

Tammy is very passionate about the work that she does and loves going to work every day!  When she is not at work or at the gym, her most absolute favorite way to spend my time, is with her granddaughters <3

STEPHANIE HUGHES

AKA: Stef (please note the spelling :)

Stephanie (Stef) is a CrossFit OneFifty OG. She joined the very first day the gym opened (back in Sept 2006) and was in fact at the very first class on the very first day. She has been with CFCL through it all and switched over to being a virtual member since it has been offered.

“I knew Val and Jason from before CFCL started. Their coaching always focused on the person first, ensuring individuals felt safe, welcomed and encouraged. They demonstrated through their actions time and time again that they are humble, caring people and leaders. This matters to me, as a client and as someone who is intentional about how I spend my time. They, along with Sarah Trinh, were helpful and supportive during a loss in our family.”

In addition to health benefits, Stef keeps attending CFCL because it’s fun. She also enjoys the friendships she has built, including in the virtual community.

“Fun is a core aspect of my life, along with my faith, my family and my friends. And the pull of that fun and in this community means the exercise benefits spill over into other areas, helping to strengthen me mentally, whether I’m fundraising for clients, serving on the Friendship Inn Board or spending time with my hubster and our pug (Moxie).”

Moxie also makes regular appearances in the virtual classes. #numberonecoach Another part of that fun is lifting things. Stef’s favourite movements are the deadlift and clean. “There’s just something about the barbell that I’ve loved since the start.”

“I’m grateful for Val, Jason and so many others I’ve met along my fitness journey. CFCL truly lives out community. “

We are grateful for you too Stef <3

Danielle Siemens

AKA: Danni

Danni started at CFCL in December of 2022. She was no stranger to CrossFit or Weightlifting and now enjoys both, jumping into our competitive program after just 6 months with us.

“I took a few years off Crossfit and weightlifting, and was hesitant to come back. Jason and the other coaching staff members have been phenomenal in helping me scale movements and still get a good workout in. 10/10 for jokes, as well! So I keep coming for the welcoming community and the coaching.”

Outside of the gym, Danielle has some really unique and fun hobbies :)

“I really, really love going grocery shopping. I get an iced coffee and a cart, and drift through the aisles making my selections, sometimes with a podcast. Best done mid-afternoon when there are few(er) people there, lol! Otherwise, I enjoy studying for my Realtor license, spending time with my husband Pat, going to our nephews’  sports games, and taking my dog, Fluffbutt, for walks.”

Richard kent & brooke anderson

AKA: Rich, Richie, Big Dick, Superman and his wife, Brooke.

Richard’s journey with CrossFit started in 2013, where Jason was his first coach. Brooke started at CFCL in 2019 and after just a few month dragged Richard to join as well, and they haven’t looked back since.

Richard: In 2013, I walked into the gym and Jason welcomed me with open arms and asked why I wanted to be there. Not knowing the answer, he said "if you want to learn how to lift heavy shit, I'll teach you". He's taught me this and so much more. Jason always finds ways to help me optimize my movement patterns and pursue higher intensity in my workouts.

Brooke: I was looking for a new gym and remembered Richard saying that Jason was always the best coach he had ever had. I immediately appreciated Jason's attention to detail, and ability to cue correct movement patterns. The community at CFCL is amazing. The entire gym feels like a family, literally from newborns to grandparents. It feels very much like fitness for longevity, instead of the stereotypical CrossFit gym when quantity counts more than quality. And I haven't had a CrossFit related injury since I joined in 2019!

Outside of the gym this couple has a secret life - Richard is a woodworker and Brooke his social media editor. She is always encouraging him… :)

Richard: I transform chunks of wood into amazing creations, like tables and bowls, using my magical tools. It's like weightlifting for my creativity muscles, but with sawdust instead of sweat. I can bench press a solid oak plank and deadlift a stack of walnut boards like nobody's business. It's my own version of getting ripped, one project at a time!

Brooke: I am always trying to get him to change the name from “Enriched Woodworks” to “Big Dicks Wood and Treasures” :) I also act as his agent for any modeling requests, although neither of these positions is compensated.

This amazing couple met playing ultimate frisbee together, and this summer will be their 10th year playing together!

JAYDEN
Bellegarde

AKA: Short Sleeve. It was given to him by his uncle who is a Wrestler.

Prior to joining Crossfit OneFity (CFCL), Jayden came across of a video of Mat Fraser on youtube. He was instantly hooked and became a fan of the sport. He began watching and learning all about CrossFit on the internet. Then a friend encouraged him to join CFCL.

“My good friend Tom motivated me and insisted I try a class out with him on a Bring-a-Friend Day. Since then, I have been here at OneFifty continuing to build relationships with people. The vision for the gym inspires me to push myself every day and give myself the ability to live a happy/healthy life. It is also great to be a part of the bigger community of CrossFit, with the plan to complete one day!”

One of Jayden’s favourite hobbies outside the gym is to go hunting and fishing. “I love being in nature and in the complete wilderness, when it is just you and the environment. It is not the adrenaline that I look forward to when hunting or fishing. It is the journey and sights you are able to witness. It makes you appreciate life much more.”

Jayden is also a husband, father and is finishing his 2nd year of Teaching. He has also been sober for 8 years.

SHAWN TOOVEY

AKA: 2V

Shawn is married and the father of two boys. He started CrossFit in 2017, and joined CFCL just before Christmas 2022.

“I need the activity for physical and mental health reasons. Stress from nursing in ICU for over 2 decades has taken its toll on my life in several areas. CrossFit is my time to heal and unload that stress. I like the challenge of a good WOD and chucking the weights around.”

Shawn is also musically and artistically orientated. He plays blues harmonica and guitar, and for the past three years he has been spending most of his downtime making art from repurposed medical plastics from my workplace at St. Paul’s ICU. Check out this story that CBC did on his creations. Also give him a follow on Instagram for a peek of what he’s up to @shawn_2V.

Shawn also loves baseball (“Go Jays!”), enjoys getting to the cabin in the summer and loves his Yorkie named “Wall*E” <3

Chase Kehrig

Chase was doing CrossFit fairly regularly many years ago, but between the demand of work and kids through the pandemic, he sort of fell off the fitness wagon. He decided it was time to get back on again, but this time just to maintain a base level of fitness for health. But that doesn’t mean fitness is boring. Chase has fun and looks forward to different movements and challenges.

“Rope climbs are my favourite because I find them to be both fun and challenging. I also really like odd object carries; they can be fun and probably translates to real life the most out of all the things we do in the gym.”

On the weekends, Chase loves riding bikes of all kinds, camping, reading books, skiing and snowboarding (yes both) in the winter… really anything that gets him outside, spending time with his wife and their two little boys. He also likes to travel.

“I have travelled to Europe several times now and love everything about it, I really like that you can hop on a train and in only a few hours be in a place with completely different architecture and culture.”

Fun fact: Chase’s favourite animal is dogs. “They are loyal and you can take them with you on your adventures.”

In addition to being a husband and father, Chase is a Civil Engineer here in Saskatoon, doing road and highway design mainly.

Emily Levasseur & james Desjardins

Emily started her on again off again relationship with Crossfit in 2019 in Prince Albert. When she moved to Saskatoon in 2020 she was introduced to Crossfit OneFifty (CFCL) before moving out of town again. When Emily began attending Advanced Care Paramedic school at Saskpolytech in the fall of 2022 she knew exactly where she needed to go when she was looking to return to Crossfit.

Emily occasionally has a tag along with her and that's her partner James. James is a heavy equipment operator and works in Fort McMurray for 2 weeks at a time, when he's off he attends classes regularly and he follows the gym programing when he's at work.

It took some convincing to get James to come to the gym but since he's started he loves the versatility of the workouts and how it's designed for all levels of fitness. It's a community like none other everyone is so welcoming and friendly.

Sadly Emily and James will be leaving Saskatoon as they are returning to LaRonge for the summer, but plan on dropping into CFCL when in the city!

Emily aspires to continue with her Crossfit journey and plans on getting her Level 1 coaching to bring more classes to LaRonge.

janet warren

AKA: MOM :P

Janet joined our virtual CrossFit crew in Nov 2022.

“I was looking for a way to have the comradery and connection that comes from regularly going to the gym with the luxury of being at home to help with saving time in getting ready for work and getting on with my day.  I was regularly attending a gym, but was feeling rushed, which didn’t always bode well to a positive start to my day.  CrossFit OneFifty’s virtual 6:00am class is the best of both worlds!”

Janet especially loves when there is deadlifts and/or bench press in the workout! She feels like these are her strongest movements, and Coach Val will attest that she has great form and even asked if she has ever considered competing in Powerlifting :)

Janet is a teacher, so whenever she gets a chance (especially in the summer months) she enjoys going up to the cabin and basking in the peacefulness of nature.  If the weather is nice, her favourite thing is to go for a nice long hike, and then relax in the hot tub! She also loves quieter activities like reading and doing jigsaw puzzles. But dont be fooled, she is also quite the thrill seaker…

“Fun fact… I took my mom skydiving to celebrate my 40th birthday and her 65th birthday!”

Family is very important to Janet, even the fur-kind (her dog Ruby).

“She LOVES to cuddle, and when I’m having a bad day, a snuggle from her always makes the day seem better!”

Jacqueline Schoenfeld

AKA: Jack

Jacqueline started at the gym at the end of Dec 2023.

“Initially, I was drawn to CFCL because of the smaller class sizes but the excellent coaches, and community is why I stayed!”

Outside of the gym, she loves spending time with her friends and family. In the summer, I like taking my dog Pal for walks by the river. Pal is her 4.2lbs Morkie, and “he’s the best dog in the world”. <3

EMMIE SUCHAN

Emmie joined CFCL in October 2022 because of her roommate Justis.

“She had told me how awesome the people were and she didn’t lie the community of people at CrossFit OneFifty are one of a kind. I cannot wait to see where this fitness journey takes me!”

Even though Emmie is new to CrossFit, she has jumped right into classes and has had no problem picking up the movements. She’s stringing together double-unders, doing unbanded pullups, and Jason is hopeful she will sign up for a weightlifting meet someday! In the meantime, we will have to settle for seeing team “Hustle and Muscle” in action at the Rumble!

Alexander Sun

AKA: Sunny boy

Alex joined CFCL in November of 2021. He stays because of the challenging but fun workouts, the coaches, and the members.

“Also Jason yelling “ALEXANDERRRR “ when I walk in late almost every second day :) I am bias and love my morning gym-goers. Everyone is so energetic, has such big smiles, and always lots of laughter - we just feel like a close-knit family. The great thing about coming here is that you can continue to learn and push yourself each day in a safe, welcoming environment. The classes are for all levels and Jason and the coaches are great at modifying any of the exercises where you are challenged but still feel comfortable.”

Prior to joining CFCL, Alex was having consistent tightness and aches in his hip area.

“Once I started coming here, I can happily say I have minimal aches in the hip area with the mentorship from Jason and the coaches. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone who reads this. I am so grateful for CrossFit OneFifty!”

What are some of your favourite hobby/thing to do outside of the gym and why?

“Hanging with my friends and family and drinking tequila - because life is all about balance! Also I like Karaoke, playing board games (especially Settlers of Catan), travelling to explore new cultures and get away from the cold.”

What is your favourite and least favourite CrossFit movement and why?

“Least - double unders… Favourite - Clean & jerks and handstand push -ps because there’s always room for improvement and can keep striving for better.”

wendy perry

Wendy started Virtual CFCL in April 2021. She lives in a rural area where options for a fitness centre/gym are limited and/or involve a long drive. In the past she tried to stay active with outdoor bootcamps in nearby communities, online fitness/workouts (no coach), and even getting programs to do on her own. She found that investing in a bit of her own fitness equipment and having the live virtual classes with coaching/feedback has made a huge difference in her motivation and accountability.

“I was very happy when CFCL started their virtual classes/program. The coach (Val) modifies the workout for injuries I am recovering from but still helps me build my mobility in a safe and gradual momentum. She has taught me to celebrate my success towards my goals and not focus on my shortcomings – this is so applicable in all areas of life! I also feel like I am part of a community as we have a chance to chat and learn about each other before we get started each day. I am very grateful. THANK YOU!!!”

Health, wellness, and fitness has always been very important to Wendy – a therapy for her body and mind. But she also find therapy in the outdoors and with pets <3

“I love taking in nature, the beauty and peacefulness during a kayaking tour (on the Bow River is my favourite). As kayaking is a more occasional treat, my more frequent passion is being out in my yard - I try to balance the work part with the relaxation part. I also love dogs and cats, all animals…but I would have to say I favour cats a little more. I like that they are independent, and have their own unique personalities - cat-itudes!!! They are the best snugglers and can really teach you how to chill out!”

Fun fact, Wendy is CFCL’s Bookkeeper and Valarie Adamson’s mom! Can you see the resemblence?!

GLENDA Beauchamp

AKA: B-champ, Glendaballs

Glenda is a OG to CrossFit OneFifty! She joined when we first opened the doors of StrongFit YXE in Sept 2016 and started coaching classes and foundations sessions in January 2017. Through her time at CFCL, she had attended over 1,000 classes and coached over 1,500 classes/sessions. Wow!

“CFCL is one of my favourite places to be (outside of a volleyball court), so it seemed like a natural transition to coach classes. The joy of watching people progress over time is amazing - even if members don't notice the progress, the coaches do! So many great friendships have been created here, plus the hugs from Mandy are legendary.”

What are your favourite CrossFit movements and why?

“Mostly involving lifting heavy stuff - Deadlifts and Backsquats…and can't forget about tire flips!”

COURTNEY & CHRIS CALLAHAN

AKA: Cally & Courtney

The Callahan’s joined CFCL because of Jason (owner of CFCL) and the Trinh family.

“His passion for fitness and never ending support for his friends, family, and community consistently shines through.” - Courtney

“I stay because of the people and my obsession with fitness.” - Cally

We asked them both a couple of fun questions, these were our favourite responses:

What are your favourite CrossFit movements and why?

“Double under and wallballs - they arent, they are actually my least favourite...just trying to use reverse psychology.” - Cally

What is your favouriate hobby/thing to do outside of the gym and why?

“Making cheesecake! Three years ago I started a side hobby business called Needy Cakes where I make custom cheesecakes. I found it impossible to find good cheesecake in the city and I made it my mission to perfect the technique and deliver quality results every time.” - Courtney

KRISTIN eichhorn

AKA: Krissy (but only my grandma is allowed to call me that)

Kristin join CrossFit OneFifty (CFCL) in Sept 2022. She had been going to planet fitness for a couple years and found her gym routine was sooooo boring that she barely went, and she really lost her passion for fitness. So when she was looking for new gym/community, she remembered that back in 2018 she had taken a 6 week boot camp hosted by CFCL and how much fun and inclusive it was. So she jumped in full force and immersed hereself in the community!

“The reason I stay is definitely because of the most amazing people I’ve met, everyone is so kind and welcoming! It’s only been 7 months and I feel like we’ve been lifelong friends! Also there’s nothing better than the feeling of self development with the workouts, skills and strength I’ve gained! I would never go back to a regular gym, I literally cannot see my life without CFCL! “

Outside of the gym you can Kristin tattooing at her studio, or with her soon-to-be hubby Sergey (who you can also sometimes see at the 6:45am class if he wakes up in time) and their dogs boomer and Bella, going for hikes and fishing at the cabin and being with family and friends!

PHIL & SARAH DAVIS

AKA: Dr. Phil (mostly doesn’t stick thank goodness…) and Davis (almost everyone calls me by my last name instead of first)

Phil met Jason (Owner of CFCL) while on an emergency medicine rotation in Saskatoon in 2015. When they move from the East Coast it seemed like a good place to start. On Sarah’s first day at the gym, she squatted with Sarah Trinh and discovered they had more in common than just their names - their babies were born on the same day!

“It felt serendipitous. We have no actual family in SK, members of CFCL have become our family.  We celebrate holidays, birthdays and the ups and downs of life together. Its unlike anything I've ever been a part of…and has blessed me with sisters who hold me up, a brother to talk baseball with, a grandma to love my kids and a coach who challenges and encourages me even when I fight him every step of the way.” - Sarah

“[I keep coming back because] its among the best 1-2 hours of my day” - Phil

What are some of your favourite things to do on the weekends/outside of the gym?

Eat, sleep and be merry. ” - Phil

What is your favourite holiday and why?

“My favourite holiday is a Newfoundland Tradition called Tib's Eve. It's on the 23rd of December and the basis of the holiday is to celebrate (ahem, drink) with your friends in preparation for spending two weeks with your family.” - Sarah

Mandy & Finn Molder

AKA: Finley & Man-etta

People always think Finn is short for something like Finley, but it’s not. He just had this name way before it was made popular by shows like “Glee.”

If you hear people shouting “Man-etta” in the gym, they are talking to Mandy. That’s her real name - although her gym pals always say it wrong (on purpose). It’s pronounced “M-anita”

Mandy & Finn joined Crossfit in Jan 2015 - Val and Jason did their Foundations classes. Mandy was looking for a structured fitness environment and needed something to help manage her anxiety. She had signed up to go alone and asked Finn to come an hour before her first session - and here they are!

“We [stay at CFCL] because of the amazing friends we have made. Jason, Sarah and family, along with countless others have become some of our bestest friends. We cherish the community every-single-day.” - Mandy

The gym also helps Finn to keep up with their teenage boys (Ty-19; Charlie-16), or at least gives him a fighting chance. Mandy uses the gym as a way to fill her days off from shift work, help manage her anxiety and it gives her a place to nurture her competitive nature.

What are your favourite things to do on the weekends/away from the gym?

“I like to curl, cross-country ski and snowshoe in the winter. In the summer I love to spend time in the garden or in a canoe, preferably exploring the wilderness up north.” - Finn

“I am sometimes game to join him, but would rather a cabin over a tent. I enjoy sitting on the deck on warm summer morning’s with coffee and a crossword watching Finn dead-head the flowers. :)” - Mandy

MEMBER FEATURE - Yurchuk Family

What started as one person trying something new, has grown into a family connecting in their journey of health and wellness. By just taking that first step out of their comfort zone, the Yurchuk family is a wonderful example for all in the CFCL community.

“I’ve tried out many other places and it can be very overwhelming with the length of my journey to get healthier. Sometimes you can feel lost and alone and intimidated not knowing how to do the exercises, or what exercises to even do. Everyone at CFCL has been so encouraging and willing to help.”

They were were on the lookout for something to do together. Conor had tried CrossFit before at a different gym and enjoyed it, so he suggested they give it a shot.

“I like that there are a lot of women who regularly attend and coach at the gym. This shows that it's a good safe and comfortable environment (i.e. no women-only sections).” - KATIE

The feelings of safety and respect for everyone is constant. I have never been made to feel bad about not being able to do something physically but I also get that push to try harder and new things. The friendships I have made since starting are a big reason I keep going! I would recommend anyone at any spot of physical condition to come!
— Megan M.

This summer I came to you with the most devastating news and you said how can I help, how can they gym family help you. This first thing was you did was to put a hold on my membership and said come whenever you want with no charge. Next you planned a fundraiser to help me and Anton with a few wish list items. 25000 burpees, a day spent with “family” and funds raised almost $4000. That day meant so much to Anton. He knew I would always have this family once he was gone. I am so grateful every time I come to the gym and get a hug from one of the members, sit and visit, workout beside people I know care about me and with coaches who know my story and know I just need to be there. Customer service has been about treating members like family and knowing when that family member needs a push, or needs a hug. You have done this for me and for so many others. CFCL will always be my gym and my family. Thank you.
