MEMBER FEATURE: Michael Linklater
We’re excited to shine the spotlight on Michael Linklater, one of our newer members (joined in September 2024) who’s already made a big impression at CFCL! In the short time he’s been with us, he’s crushed goals, inspired others, and brought awesome energy to every class. Let’s get to know him a little better!
Meet Michael
Michael wears many hats—he’s the co-founder of Sohkisiwin Solutions, an Indigenous strategy and integration company, and the founder of Boys With Braids, a campaign celebrating the cultural significance of braided hair in Indigenous traditions. A proud Nehiyaw (Cree) from the Thunderchild First Nation on Treaty 6 Territory, Michael brings his heritage and passion for community into everything he does.
You might also recognize him from his time with the Saskatchewan Rattlers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), where he capped off his career in style with a championship win before retiring.
On top of it all, Michael is a proud dad of four and has a golden doodle named Finn! These days, he’s juggling work, family, and fitness like a pro—and we’re so excited he’s added CFCL to the mix!
How He Found CFCL
Michael heard about CFCL through a friend. After taking a break from another gym because of an injury, he was ready to jump back in—and we’re so glad he did!
“When I first came to the gym, I was blown away by how welcoming everyone was. Seriously, I think the whole class introduced themselves before we were even done!”
Fitness Goals and Wins
Michael came in with a clear goal: to clean 225 pounds. With tips and coaching from the CFCL crew, he has already nailed it!
Another big win so far? Improving his technique across all CrossFit movements. “The coaching here is next level,” he says.
His motto? “Keep fit and have fun!” And honestly, we couldn’t agree more.
Favorite Workouts and Challenges
Michael’s all about workouts that push him to his limits, and his favorite movements are muscle-ups and rope climbs. Why? “They’re tough, technical, and just plain cool!”
The biggest challenge? Taking it slow. “I always want to go full steam ahead, but I’ve learned to take my time and build up.”
Life Outside the Gym
For Michael, CrossFit isn’t just about what happens in the gym—it’s about what it inspires outside of it. “The challenges in workouts remind me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things in life.”
Through Prime Basketball Development, Michael continues to inspire the next generation, blending his love of basketball with lessons on living a healthy, sober lifestyle.
Oh, and he’s also a certified yoga instructor (200 level)! Who knew?
The CFCL Vibes
What does Michael love most about CFCL? Easy: the people.
“I’ve never been to a gym with a community like this. Everyone supports each other—it’s like one big, sweaty family. I actually get sad when work keeps me from making it to class!”
He finds inspiration all around him, from beginners giving it their all to seasoned athletes setting the bar high.
And, of course, the coaching staff gets a big shoutout for helping him hit his goals.
Michael’s Advice
To anyone just starting CrossFit, Michael says: “Take your time and stick with it. CrossFit is something you can do for the rest of your life. Don’t worry if you don’t get it right away—just keep showing up and enjoy the ride!”
Looking Ahead
Michael’s next goal? Ring muscle-ups!
For him, CrossFit is more than just a workout—it’s mental, physical, and even emotional. “It keeps me strong in every way,” he says.
Michael, we’re so honored to have you as part of the CFCL crew. Your story, energy, and passion are an inspiration to us all. Let’s keep climbing those ropes and smashing those cleans—together! 💪
