Moustache Open Recap
A lot of proud moments yesterday at the 2016 Moustache Open, but first off a very sincere thank you to CrossFit Brio, the SWA, and all volunteers for making it happen. It was a very long day and the biggest Provincial Meet in the history of the SWA, so thanks for your hard work!
The first session saw three members of the Kilostalk Weightlifting Club competing:
Jason Trinh - 77kg Senior Men's Class: 100/104/107X, 140X/140/146X, 244kg Total, Gold Medal
I came into this meet feeling strong, and I left feeling strong. Although I didn't reach my goals, I feel good about the consistency of my lifts at higher loads. This was my third best-ever total in competition, and although I fell on my ass at 146, it was a PR attempt that I feel confident I can make this season. Floating around in the middle of a weight class is fun, but I will be filling out a weight class at some point this season :)
Steven Benoit - 77kg Senior Men's Class: 94/98X/98X, 118/123X/123X, 212kg Total, Silver Medal
For the first time in over 2 years, Steven competed in the 77kg class. Just 6 weeks earlier, he was 3.9kg heavier, and although this was not his best showing, he has made slow, steady progress over the past 6 months. His overall Sinclair was nearly identical to that of his previous meet, despite finishing 10kg lower in the total. I look forward to seeing where Steven ends up this season as his commitment to his diet, training, and recovery are on point. LET'S GO CHAMP!
Christopher Callahan - 85kg Senior Men's Class: 100/104X/104X, 125/130/135, 235kg Total, Silver Medal
Christopher came in at a lighter bodyweight than his previous meet, but was able to complete more lifts and finish at a higher total. This time, he got out of his comfort zone and decided not to power snatch and power clean, and he nailed all three power jerks to go 3/3 for the last half of the session. Chris finished with a 5kg competition PR and 2kg lifetime for his clean & jerk, and a huge competition total PR. Great job Chris, I'm looking forward to your progress this season.
In the fourth session:
Ben Mah - 94kg Senior Men's Class: 88/93/97, 120/124/127X, 221kg Total, Silver Medal
After a 1.5 year break from Weightlifting, Ben's return was a huge success. He was able to achieve a 1kg lifetime PR on the snatch, 7kg competition PR clean & jerk, and 15kg competition PR total. The focused effort he has put into his lifts is really taking shape, and he will be back with even bigger numbers in the near future. Great job Ben!
Philip Rees - 105kg+ Master's Men 50-54 Class: 57/62/67, 78/83/86X, 150kg Total, Gold Medal
This was Phil's first ever meet, where he went 5/6. Nerves were quickly overcome, as had his sights set on the Master's Provincial Records. Phil was able to break the snatch record by 2kg, but was called for a press-out for his clean and jerk. In the end, Phil bumped up his lifetime snatch PR by 5kg, and performed very well at his first meet. Congratulations Phil!
In the fifth session:
Abra Thompson - 69kg Senior Women's Class: 65/68/71, 93X, 93, 99, 170kg Total, Silver Medal
Yet again, Abra raises the bar by going 5/6 and hitting a 1kg lifetime PR in her snatch, 1kg lifetime PR in her clean & jerk, and 2kg lifetime PR in her total. Her hard work, athleticism, tenacity, and positive attitude under pressure are the reason why she is so successful. Congratulations Abra, we are all very proud of you.
In the sixth session:
Heather Donahue - 75kg+ Senior Women's Class: 35/38/42X, 50/55/58X, 93kg Total, Bronze Medal
Heather's athleticism and positivity are reasons why she's going to go far. She's very coachable, understands her body well, and is patient. I'm very excited to watch her growth within the sport in the upcoming years. Great job on your first meet Heather!
