Changes in Programming & Workouts

Effective Friday, November 6th, we will be moving towards a “practice” phase in the programming of our daily workouts, which will serve a number of purposes:

  • By stepping out of the “competition” and “training” mindset, we are able to improve on our movement quality and develop the skills that will yield the greatest return in our efforts. CrossFit workouts range in intensities but most of the time we will push ourselves to the limit which is not always the intent. For the next four weeks, all members are encouraged to take a big step back and focus on virtuosity in movement and give your bodies an opportunity to not only recover but gain mobility and strength yet still enjoy exercise in the presence of others.

  • The most powerful tool you have that is completely within your control is your pace, and while we do focus much of our efforts on knowing the maximum maintainable pace, we will now find a pace that is simply maintainable. Move at a pace where you can continue to move without having to break for more than 5 seconds at a time, rather than moving too quickly and then taking large breaths for 10+ seconds and breaking down in technique.

  • The perfect pace comes from perfect movement. If you are exercising based on how quickly your body allows you to move, your lungs will not be able to keep up. For those that have been doing CrossFit for years, you can use the next four weeks to dial everything back and learn something about yourselves for each movement. Focus on developing mobility and skills, not on counting reps or keeping track of times.

  • Humility is the number one attribute to see growth for those at StrongFit, whether from the perspective of a member receiving coaching or as the owner receiving feedback from members. Check your egos and before formulating a response, listen to what is being said and try to understand the other person’s perspective.

Coincidentally, the Government of Saskatchewan has just issued a Public Health Order which is effective on the same day, which includes mandatory masks in indoor public places (except for “Persons actively engaged in physical exercise) so exactly what we have already prescribed at StrongFit. I’m incredibly proud to say that as a whole, our gym community has been crushing it and this current phase of programming will be suitable to all those who would like to wear a mask the entire time. Yes, this was intentional, and I believe we all can be better if we slow things down and learn to control our breath behind a mask.

Happy fitnessing!

Sincerely,
Coach Tron
